1990 to Date Production Manager

Company manufactured industrial ceramic composites and powders, which are used in the electronics, packaging/printing and refractory coating industry sectors. Process technology includes powder handling and mixing; hot pressing and machining. A £8.5 million turnover business with 85 employees.

Reporting to the General Manager responsible for over 60 people in Manufacturing Operations - Engineering, Quality, Health & Safety, Personnel, Research & Development, Information Technology.
Responsible for ensuring products are manufactured to strict ISO 9001 quality standards in line with production schedules and tight budgetary costs on a multi shift basis. Acted as a Deputy for the General Manager. Promoted to this position after 3 years as a Project Engineer.

Key achievements include:

Implemented an innovative 4-shift/7 day work pattern to provide additional capacity to meet growth in sales demand.
Developed a close relationship with local and national Government agencies securing funding for investment and training initiatives
Re-organised workflow and operating practices in all manufacturing teams to reduce lead times by 50%, stocks by £ 280k and increased capacity by 44 %
Implemented a company training regime based on NVQ structure supported by local Training and Enterprise Council
Negotiated new improved purchasing arrangements with key raw material and utility suppliers resulting in cost savings of over £ 200k
Integrated new manufacturing operations relocated in 1998 into existing operation
Controlled construction and fitting out of new £2 million production/office facility
Implemented a culture of “involved” rather than “confrontational” relationship with employees
Controlled major environmental improvements to all site operations in-conjunction with the Environment Agency

Steetley Building Products, Newcastle, Staffs.

Manufacturer of high quality clay bricks and tiles on 14 different sites and employed over 11,000 people. Employed in the company technical department with responsibility for developing new and existing products/processes in addition to commissioning new equipment/plants.

Key achievements at Steetley

Awarded a travelling scholarship by an industry association for academic project work. This enabled me to work in the USA for 1 month.
Made major contributions to current British Standards.
Evaluated potential key manufacturing site locations and commissioned plants.

1979 to 1987 Product Technologist
Fairey Industrial Ceramics Ltd, Stone, Staffordshire

Faireys manufactured industrial ceramics ranging from liquid and gas filters to high temperature resistant kiln furniture and specialist refractories. Originally joined as a Laboratory Technician and progressed within the company.
