INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE
As the son of a regular expatriate Shell employee, I spent an important part of my youth growing up in places such as Curacao (8 years), Indonesia (2 years) and Qatar (Persian Gulf) (1 year). During my ocean going career of approx. 10 years with Shell Tankers, I navigated all the oceans and visited all continents. During my loan assignment to Shell International Marine, I lived and worked in London (UK) during 4 years. From this London base I made frequent and long term travels to ports worldwide for inspection visits of harbor facilities and for other “port audit” activities.
As a manager of different international travel assistance companies, frequent international travel, both scheduled business travel as well as ad hoc emergency assistance missions, have always been part and parcel of my workload. Since 1991 I have been posted to Belgium and I have taken official residence there since 1994

VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES
Since 1995, as a volunteer and on a non-paid basis, I have been Chairman of the Board of YFU Benelux International Exchange, located in Vinkeveen (NL), with subsidiary offices in Leuven (B) and Liège (B). The organization is driven principally by over 250 volunteers within the Benelux countries (Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxemburg), supported by a small professional staff. YFU is the abbreviation of Youth For Understanding. The organization’s activity consists of organizing, distributing, executing and monitoring international exchange programs for high school students who go abroad or come here from abroad for an entire school year or a semester. In the country of their destination they are hosted by a host family and are placed in a host school and follow tuition in the language of the country of their destination. YFU Benelux International Exchange is the Benelux organization within a growing network of similar non-profit volunteer driven YFU organizations in over 40 countries worldwide. All these organizations are autonomous, but the exchange programs take place in accordance with internationally agreed quality and programmatic standards. These Basic Standards and other policies and procedures are set by an internationally governing and policy making body, the YFU International Advisory Council, an internationally elected body of 14 YFU officials. In addition to my position as Chairman of the Board of the YFU Benelux organization, I have also been an elected member of this International Advisory Council since 1998, and currently I am the vice chair of this body.YFU was founded in the USA in 1951 and its mission statement is “to prepare young people for their future opportunities and responsibilities in a changing, interdependent and multicultural world”
