Work Experience

Professionally qualified (MSc) and highly experienced Operational Business Manager, combines Internal Audit qualifications (FIIA/MIIA) and experience to achieve high standards of effectiveness and ensures the added value from all company activities. Internal Audit Role - 14 years experience as an Internal Auditor with Department for Education and Skills (DfES) with responsibility for developing the future role, direction, scope and coverage of the Audit Team. Managed approx. 60 audits. These were reviewed by the Head of Internal Audit and assessed as being “very good”, or above. Managing Resources - 10 years experience of successfully negotiating and managing contracts in excess of £180 million per year, on behalf of DfES and Department for Trade and Industry (DTI).
VFM - Developed a Value for Money approach to Contract Management. Based on thorough assessment of risk/ materiality, supported by effective monitoring, reporting and evaluation programme. When followed down the supply chain to the point of delivery, this helped to ensure the effective use of funds. Lead responsibility for establishing the Value for Money Group in Government Office for Yorkshire and the Humber. This group operated over a three year period and had a fundamental impact in the identification of poor VFM and, in some cases, fraudulent activity.
Managing Change
Following the announcement that TECs would close in 2001, worked with organisations in Yorkshire and Humberside to ensure the successful management of change. This involved the transfer of personnel, programmes, premises/fixtures/ fittings etc and the novation of contracts to various successor bodies. Worked with TEC Directors, Accountants, Legal Advisors, liquidators etc to agree indemnities and ultimately secure return of some £25m in financial reserves for Secretary of State. This success was based on careful planning, key project management skills, negotiation, delegation, team working, attention to detail and tenacity.
Managing Staff - 16 years experience of managing teams, ranging from 2 or 3 members, to a team of 18 staff. All teams were managed in line with Investor in People Standards. A very effective manager who ensures the successful deployment of people, through effective planning, briefing, consultation, coaching, training, delegation, supervision and reporting procedures.

Quality Assurance - EFQM/BEM trained auditor. Dissertation for MSc related to Developing Total Quality Management. Licentiate Member of Institute of Quality Assurance. Experience and theory ensures quality control of contract delivery. Responsible for bringing together Finance and Quality Assurance specialists.

I have held a full UK driving licence for approximately 20 years and have had no driving convictions, fines, penalty points etc. I own my own car and this is of course available for work.I enjoy very good health and since 1971 I have had only two major absences from work. In November 1978 I broke my leg (both tibia and fibula) playing football and was absent from work until March 1979. On holiday in Majorca in June 2001, again playing football I broke my big toe and two bones in my foot and was absent from work for 3 weeks, (Time to stop playing football).
