GKN Defence Ltd.: (1997 - 2003) - Engineering Director

Alvis Vehicles is one of Europe’s largest designers and manufacturers of medium weight armoured fighting vehicles. I am responsible for all of the Engineering activity in Telford with a team consisting of over 160 professional engineers. I have full budget control for direct and indirect salaries, capital, overheads and software licenses. Since the acquisition of Vickers Defence Systems, I have been working with the Vickers Engineering Director on how best to merge the two departments.

Achievements
· Managed a modest redundancy programme and then a significant recruitment campaign, increasing Alvis Vehicles Engineering staff from c120 to c160 in order to match dramatically increasing workload.
· Leads the Alvis MRAV Technical team.
· Worked with German partners on the MRAV programme at Director level to address key technical issues such as reduction of overall vehicle weight and design for manufacture.
· Successfully completed a major reorganisation of the entire office area along the lines of a ‘Design Studio’.
· Produced strategic plan for the development of Alvis Digitization capability and directed the initial implementation. This has included making numerous senior level presentations, both internally and externally.
· Led the successful PIP (Platform Integration Pilot) programme
· Introduced new CAD systems into the engineering department (ProE). Responsible for negotiating the commercial terms with PTC.
· Managed the merging of the Alvis Vehicles and GKN Defence Engineering organisations and the production of a Key Technology Plan appropriate to the combined business.

Westland Helicopters: (1987 - 1997) - various.

Westland Helicopters designs and manufactures medium and large military and civil helicopters for the world market. I began my career in Westland as Software Manager, progressing through Head of Advanced Engineering and finally spent 5 years as Chief Systems Engineer before being invited to join GKN Defense.

Achievements
· Successful management of a number of high value subcontracts with various vendors (the maximum single contract value was c£25 million).
· Responsible for the management of a department of over 300 systems engineers with full budgetary control for salaries, capital expenditure, training and overheads.
· Effectively dealt with the cultural issues associated with Italian partners and various European, American and Canadian suppliers.
· 9 months secondment to Litton Systems in Toronto, working in Canada, giving management advice and consultancy. Responsible for the decision to switch glass suppliers from Litton’s in-house capability to NEC.
· Managed the design of the Merlin Avionic System, including the analysis of over 5000 requirements.
· Completed Key Technology Plan defining strategic research plans for Westland Helicopters.
· Initiated several multinational collaborative research projects using EU and DTI funding.
· Responsible for a department of 60 software and electrical design engineers doing software development in-house and management of various sub-contractors supplying avionic equipment for Westland aircraft.
· Defined and ran the software audit and management process which was used throughout the EH101 programme

· Taught myself software programming, both high level and assembler.
· Wrote various software articles

Laker Airways, Gatwick (Dec 1979 - Feb 1982) - First Officer flying McDonnell Douglas DC10.

Flew over 4000 hours with Laker Airways and British Airways, approximately 50% of which was acting as Pilot in Command

British Airways (April 1972 - Dec 1979) First Officer flying Hawker Siddley Trident aircraft




Education

Qualifications include a Class 1 Honours degree in Electronic Engineering, Ph.D., as well as completion of various general business courses including Sundridge Park and IMD in Lausanne.

Experienced Engineering professional, with 20 year’s Systems, Software, Aviation and Vehicle Engineering experience in the Defence industry, following 10 years as an Airline pilot, Engineering Director at Alvis Vickers Ltd. until end of year (2002)
