Main duties: Accountable for P&L to the company board for £70mn project annual budget and delivery of a new £500mn radio-based signalling system. Directed integration with Virgin £1.5bn rolling stock and Railtrack WCRM £5.8bn programmes.
Quantifiable benefits to the employer: Significant improvement in safety and performance of high-speed, tilting trains. Development of UK’s first ERTMS compliant signalling and GSM-R telecomms systems opening new marketing prospects. Achieved and maintained the annual turnover of £70mn and exceeded forecast profit margins by 20%.
Main Achievements: Created and managed a new business unit at Watford with an integrated project team (ALSTOM/ Railtrack/ Marconi) of 180 staff. SYMONDS – VIVENDI GROUP LTD Senior Project Manager APRIL 1997- NOV 1998
Main duties: Responsible for delivering the Symonds £30mn combined heat and power (CHP) implementation programme at British Sugar Wissington complex, Europe’s largest sugar factory. Managing a joint project team of 40 staff and four major subcontractors. Member of Symonds corporate Strategic Project Management Board developing improved MIS.



Quantifiable benefits to the employer: The CHP plant employs the world's first 50MWe GE LM6000PD dry low NOx dual-fuel gas turbine; 170t/h 75 barg Schelde low-emissions waste heat boiler with supplementary and auxiliary firing made by Ganz in Hungary; a 30MWe ABB G40 back pressure steam turbine; and a Honeywell TDC3000 plant control system. Secured 15% energy cost saving for the plant, and a new revenue stream from electricity exports valued at £250k p.a.
Main Achievements: Transformed a difficult front-end design situation into an effective alliance execution phase by forging an integrated, common-goal team with the client, contractors and suppliers. Introduced performance benchmarking and formal change control to maintain budget. As a direct result of the successful execution of this project, the client has retained Symonds to implement further similar CHP schemes to produce additional revenue from export power.

McDERMOTT MARINE CONSTRUCTION LTD Proposal Project Manager APRIL 1996-APRIL 1997
Main duties: Directed a team of 20 staff responsible for design competition studies and proposals for Shell Shearwater offshore field and BP Marine Vapour Recovery at Grangemouth valued over £50mn.
Quantifiable benefits to the employer: Entry into a new a new jack-up and marine terminal markets during a period of decline in orders for traditional platforms.
Main Achievements: Negotiated alliance contracts based on Capex/Opex NPV life cycle costing, probabilistic risk assessment, sensitivity and what-if analysis techniques.

BRITISH RAILWAYS BOARD, BR PROJECTS Senior Project Manager MAY 1994-APRIL 1996
Main duties: In charge of all infrastructure and rolling stock projects for Class 373 (Eurostar) electromagnetic compatibility studies and safety assessment. Accountable to the board for project P&L of £3mn annual budget. Presented safety cases to Railtrack’s EE&CS Safety Assessment Panel.
Quantifiable benefits to the employer: Successfully delivered the pioneering Safety Case enabling Eurostar trains to operate faster on the London to Paris route.
Main Achievements: Instrumental in transferring risk assessment methodology, first developed in the offshore industry, to the railway sector despite the challenges of BR privatisation.

CIS ENGINEERING & CONSTRUCTION LTD Engineering Manager DEC 1993-MAY 1994
Main duties: Lead company start-up. Directed 11 staff in proposal and purchasing functions, bid evaluation, controlling subcontracts, and supervising site construction. Responsible for project management, design, and procurement.
Quantifiable benefits to the employer: Set up and staffed a project office in Fareham, and established a partnership with BMP Consultancy. Delivered projected annual turnover of £5m and 12% margin.
