Work Experience

Oct 1999 to Present: Implementation/Senior Project Manager – Capula Ltd
Within this project structured organisation, I am responsible for the implementation of several integrated control system projects for the power generation industry. For approximately half of this period I have been responsible for the nuclear business group. The projects range in value from £50k to over £10M and have implementation schedules from a few months to several years. I have line management responsibility for over thirty engineers and support staff and manage the implementation group with the support of five project managers. My duties include enquiry review and tender compilation in support of the business manager, project direction and guidance for the project managers throughout the project life cycle, group resource planning and reporting, senior staff training and development, staff recruitment, staff welfare and discipline, project financial reporting and auditing to director level, business planning and reporting, staff performance reviews and salary revision recommendations. My workload is varied and demanding of involves a considerable level of customer facing.

July 1997 to October 1999: Project Manager – Capula Ltd (formerly Instem Ltd)
During this period I successfully managed (to time, to spec and significantly within budget) two large (>£5M) system integration projects at Drax and Didcot power stations. Both projects involved the removal of the traditional ‘hard desk’ for power generating unit control and the introduction of a ‘soft desk’ control system achieved through the integration of PLC based plant control and SCADA based HMI. The project scope extended from specification through to site commissioning of plant actuators, instrumentation, cabling, multiple PLCs and operator control facility (HMI). Both projects were outage based and therefore progress against the planned schedule of paramount importance to the station. As project manager I was responsible for all project planning, financial control and progress reporting to customers and Instem senior staff and directors. The project teams varied in size as the projects moved through the implementation phases, peaking at over twenty. Throughout the projects I retained line management responsibility for all project staff with support from selected team leaders. As project manager I was responsible for correct implementation practise throughout the software/hardware design development, implementation and site installation/commissioning phases in accordance with Instem ISO 9001 accredited quality procedures.

Jan 1989 to July 1997: Rolls Royce International Combustion – Project/Proposals Engineer
I joined International Combustion (NEI group at the time) as part of the project team engaged in the design for the 900MW coal fired stations planned by the former CEGB. Within this functional organisation I was responsible for the design and implementation of all controls and instrumentation systems. This involved the technical and commercial co-ordination of internal design teams and external subcontracted mechanical and electrical design and build teams in support of the contract. Privatisation of the CEGB some months later meant that the project did not progress beyond design phase. I worked on several further projects before moving into the proposals department for approximately three years, during which time I was responsible for all C&I aspects of larger mechanical tenders and completed many C&I only proposals.

Jan 1986 to Jan 1989: MOD AWE Aldermaston – Projects Engineer (PTO)
Responsible to the project manager for all C&I aspects of several ‘green field’ nuclear waste management projects on site. Duties extended from site excavation planning to CI&E subcontractor design review and testing. My role including a significant element of customer interface and interpretation of user requirements.
