(July '00 – February ‘02t) AOL Benelux, Utrecht
Programming Director
AOL Benelux is an AOL Time Warner company, the world’s largest media company, also one of the leading companies in Europe. In the Netherlands the main brand is family Internet Service Provider CompuServe. As part of the senior Management Team and reporting directly into the Managing Director, I am responsible for heading a department of 22 professionals, responsible for initiating, designing, developing & maintaining all online areas, both for members and non-members (www.compuserve.nl).

Among these areas are Channels for affinity groups like Kids, Mobiel, Lifestyle, Entertainment, Nieuws etc. One of my key tasks is leveraging and integrating all Time Warner assets into these Channels, like Warner Bros Movies, Warner Music, Cartoon Network and CNN. Also, my department is responsible for all product development like email clients, search engines, personal homepage builders, Online Zoo, Love@CompuServe, Kids Channel etc. The team consists of multimedia developers, analyst programmers, graphic designers, editors and content acquisition managers.

The objective of this group is to maximize the time spent online by members and to maximize pageviews generated by members and non-members. In order to achieve this I reorganized the group into a clustered approach, outlining new requirements of resources, defining job profiles and hiring staff.

During my time as head of this team online time increased from 6 hours per month per member to 10 hours per month per member. Pageviews accumulated from 60.000 on average per day to 350.000 on average per day.

Among my daily tasks are, creating a strategic overview, developing business cases & plans, overseeing & leading all operational activities, coaching the team and networking with both internal and external product- and content sources.

AOL Europe has decided to stop all new developments and investments per 1 January 2002, basically sun setting the CompuServe brand in the Netherlands. As a result the Dutch organization had to be drastically reduced.

I instructed and liaised with all local content procurement managers, editorial staff, web designers, product managers and marketing managers of all international branches of this pan-European ISP.

As a member of the International Management team I shared responsibility in shaping and developing a long-term strategy for the company. I was involved in setting up partnerships with key industry players, including: Reuters, YACK!, GlobalNet Financial, Shell, MSNBC, Ziff Davis, CNET, Endemol, MaMaMedia, Universal, Vitaminic and many others.

(April ’96 – January ’99) Mercury Records, Hilversum
A&R Manager
The Mercury Records label is a subdivision of Universal Music Group, one of the largest ‘entertainment companies’ in the world. Formerly known as PolyGram Records, the label produces and markets CD’s all over the world in all musical genres. I was Artist & Repertoire Manager for over two years.

As a member of the management team I was responsible for maintaining a healthy and successful artist roster through scouting, contracting and coaching new talent. Coming up with new concepts and finding new repertoire I was coordinating with product managers, sales managers and account managers. Some of Mercury’s artists were De Dijk, Jantje Smit, Henk Westbroek, BZN, André Rieu, Normaal etc.

(April ’94 – April ‘96) PolyGram Netherlands, Hilversum
International Exploitation Manager
Dutch artists need to be promoted and marketed outside of Holland. I basically set up this department - unique in the industry at that time. It proved to be very successful; in a short period international income (all-in fees) tripled.
While there I developed my marketing experience, my language skills and my contacts with European media. Among others, I have been instrumental in managing promotional strategies for Marco Borsato in Belgium, André Rieu in Germany and USA and Laura Fygi in Japan.

(June ’87 – April ‘94) Wisseloord Studios, Hilversum
Booking Manager/Mastering Engineer/Studio Assistant
I started out working as technical assistant and developed into mastering engineer. ‘Mastering’ is the final creative/technical process of an audio master tape before it leaves the recording studio and is shipped to the CD press plant.

During the last three years at Wisseloord I was responsible for booking and managing all (7) studios, acquiring new bookings by contacting artists, producers, and record companies and scheduling studios and engineers.
