Primary Responsibilities

The total operational management of busy Warehouse, Distribution and Packhouse functions in conjunction with full facilities management responsibility for the site.
The Management of all raw material stocks including inventory and yield reporting.
The financial performance of the Operations Department, managing a budget in excess of £2M pa.
The day-to-day running of a third party packing service offered to a sister company within the Keelings group.
Maintaining service level to customer of not less than 99.85%

Major Achievements

Restructured Warehouse and Distribution department to remove £50K pa of excess salary costs, by removing 2 x supervisory levels of staffing.
Through consultation with staff implemented a new system of calculating overtime payments across all hourly paid Operational staff which realised savings in excess £25K within the first year.
Developed a third party melon packing business for a sister company. This activity now covers all variable costs and makes £250K contribution to fixed overheads per annum.
Developed and implemented a KPI system for the Warehouse team that has facilitated improvements in productivity realising savings of £50K pa. (3p /case)


April 2000 ¡V May 2002 Operations Manager, Wight Salads
Growers, packers, processors and importers of tomatoes for the major high street Multiples. (Largest producers of Organic tomatoes in Europe). Turnover £18m.

Primary Responsibilities

The total operational management of personnel, packaging, maintenance, logistics and production functions within a rapidly expanding business supplying to five major Multiples.
The Management of product, both domestic and imported, across internal and contracted packing facilities ensuring total product usage and effective cost control.
Restructuring of the management team (6 departmental reports) and reorganisation of all production personnel (120 indirect reports) to ensure an improvement in service level and a reduction in wastage.
Presenting recommended cost improvement strategies and Cap Ex projects to the board.




Major Achievements

Initiated major cap-ex project (£200k) to improve packing cost efficiencies, payback achieved before 2-year period budgeted.
Reduced distribution costs by over £80k by initiating customer backhaul utilisation and rationalisation of distribution channels.
Reduced packaging spend by over £70k by rationalisation of supply base and enhanced cost negotiations.
Reduced casual labour costs by £50k through sourcing and cost control initiatives.


January 1997 ¡V March 2000 Operations Manager, Priory Produce
Growers, packers and importers of root vegetables for the major high street Multiples. Largest supplier of onions into Tesco within that category, with significant carrot and parsnip business.

Primary Responsibilities

The daily and long term organisation and management of all site staff encompassing production, technical and administrative functions.
Planning and procurement of all goods inwards encompassing day-to-day resource allocation as well as long term strategic programming of raw materials and labour, through to packing and consumables.
To control production activities and liase with sales function to ensure the maximisation of crop yields.
To control, review and refine all unit costs to ensure maximum efficiency.

Major achievements

The successful project management of a £2m store ¡¥Greenfield¡¦ build project, from concept through to completion within an allocated 6-month timescale.
Managing the Carrot and Parsnip business efficiently during periods of high volume growth from 3,000 cases per week to 15,000 cases per week.
Improving quality systems and technical relationship with major customers to aid sales volume growth.
Rationalisation of packing operations closing a satellite packing station and relocating facilities within main site saving £60k pa.


May 1994 to January 1997 Seed Centre Manager, Lords Ground Partnership
Agricultural growers and storers of specialist seed crops.

Primary Responsibilities

To plan and implement Intake, Storage, Preparation and Dispatch programmes for seed potatoes (10,000t) and Daffodil bulb (1200t) crops.
To liase with the appropriate Government inspection agency (Plant Health & Seeds Inspectorate) to ensure growing stocks adherence to European Certification Standards, during ¡¥Growing season¡¦ and dispatch inspections.
To implement international sales programmes to customers stringent technical specifications and logistical requirements I.e. Supplying seed potato into PepsiCo¡¦s (Walkers Crisps) production programme both domestically and into Eastern Europe.
The design, development and implementation of a multi-user bespoke stock control and Management Information system, including the on-going day to day management of the system.

Major Achievements

To pioneer the export of English Seed potatoes to South Africa, a first for this country, ensuring stringent phytosanitary requirements were satisfied.
To manage and develop a relationship with Management Development Services (MDS), a produce industry backed post-graduate training and industrial placement organisation.

Malting subsidiary of Guinness Brewing (G.B.) supplying over 60% of the malt required to brew all Guinness Stout in this country

Primary responsibilities

To plan, implement, monitor and revise production plans to ensure finished malt compliance to Guinness¡¦ quantitative and qualitative specifications.
To devise, implement and audit a company-wide Quality System (BS5750) as a member of a defined project group.
To instigate a Quality Workgroup to focus key personnel upon the changing ethos of the company to a quality driven production culture.

Major Achievements

Completing a rigorous selection procedure to qualify for a company sponsored position on a 3-month expedition to Zimbabwe with Operation Raleigh.
Creating a quality circle, with the production operatives and supervisors, to address quality issues regarding the analytical composition of malt produced. Through the work of the quality circle, the site rose several places in the quality league of malt suppliers into the brewery.
